Get the ‘AT&T Final Four 2013′ badge while it lasts

Maybe your bracket is busted, but that’s no reason to give up on the NCAA Tournament just yet.

Activated for the Final Four games is the ‘AT&T Final Four 2013‘ badge. To unlock this badge you must be following AT&T on Foursquare. There are a few ways to get the badge as Matters Of Grey has pointed out, but the easiest way for the majority of South Dakotans to get it is by heading to the nearest venue with a main category of “Sports Bar.” One check-in—no shout necessary—and the badge is yours.

ESPN partners with Foursquare to celebrate Opening Day 2013

There’s nothing more American than baseball, beer, hotdogs and … badges?

Old Design

New Design

ESPN‘s latest badge partnership with Foursquare indicates that it’s a grand slam of a relationship for both parties, indeed. The ‘Baseball Fever’ badge, although it’s not the prettiest of the bunch, is at least the third badge from longtime partner, ESPN. Other active badges include ‘Triple Play’, ‘ESPN Foam Finger’ and the now retired ‘College GameDay’.

Much to my dismay, I have yet to see the badge be unlocked. Usually a simple keyword search on Twitter.com will bring up several tweets from people who have pushed their badge unlock notification into the Twitterverse. But as of making this post, my searching has elicited nothing.

What we do know, is that Sunday, Apr. 31 was Opening Day for many Major League Baseball teams around the country. The teams that didn’t play on Sunday most likely had their first games of the season today, April 1.

visitPA partners with Foursquare for third consecutive year

Do you believe in the myth of the Groundhog?

According to Pennsylvania legend, if the Groundhog arises from his burrow on February 2 and sees his shadow then spring will come early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will supposedly be startled by his shadow and retreat back into his burrow, thus condemning us with six more weeks of winter weather.

For the third year in a row, Pennsylvania’s tourism agency, visitPA, has partnered with Foursquare to promote their most well known holiday.

The 2013 “PA Groundhog Day” badge can be unlocked on February 2, not just in Pennsylvania, but across the globe.

How to unlock the ‘Naan-Sense’ badge

Are you crazy for curry? Tell the world (or at least your Foursquare friends) when you unlock the Naan-Sense badge for checking-in to Indian food restaurants.

This expertise badge was first released back in December 2012.

Like other expertise badges, it can be unlocked when you check-in to three unique Indian restaurants or the same venue five times. You will level-up every three unique check-ins after the initial unlock.

The best way to find an eligible Indian restaurant in your area is by searching the keyword “Indian” in Explore. The search tool will run your query against venues in Foursquare’s database and return the closest results. Make sure to find venues with the main category of “Indian restaurant,” as sometimes Foursquare will match tags and tips.

NASA partners with Foursquare to launch the Mars ‘Curiosity Explorer’ badge

NASA, a long-time partner with Foursquare, is now pushing their Mars Curiosity Explorer mission even further with a partner Foursquare badge.

Typically, Nationwide badges like this are not available in the great state of South Dakota. The ‘Curiosity Explorer’ badge, however, can be partially unlocked without leaving the state boarder.

To unlock the badge, you must be following NASA on Foursquare. Then, check-in to three venues where they have left a tip. This should trigger the badge unlock.

Unlock message reads:

Get out your rock-vaporizing laser! You’ve explored your scientific curiosities just like NASA’s Curiosity rover on Mars. Stay curious and keep exploring. You never know what you’ll find.

There are two venues in South Dakota where NASA has left tips. To find them, visit NASA’s Foursquare page and click “See all tips.” Zoom in on the map and locate South Dakota. The venues are South Dakota Discovery Center and Aquarium in Pierre and The Journey Museum in Rapid City.

‘Schmear’ some cream cheese on your bagel

Schmear some cream cheese on your bagel. After all, you earned it. Well, actually you didn’t do anything to earn it, other than checking into bagel joints.

Foursquare has released an expertise badge for bagel lovers worldwide. The badges’ name ‘Schmear’ is a slang verb describing the way cream cheese is spread on most bagels—thick and heavy.

The ‘Schmear‘ badge is retroactive, meaning that your previous check-ins apply to unlocking it. And, like other expertise badges, you unlock it by checking into the same venue five times or at three unique venues. Like all expertise badges, you can level up after the initial unlock, showing your true expertise. New levels are earned per five additional unique venues you check into.

Unlock message reads:

You know what you want: one everything bagel with scallion cream cheese, lox, red onion, tomato, capers, and maybe some sturgeon. Better pick up an Altoid while you’re at it…
